Sony revealed its new Playstation Vita at LA’s E3 Conference Monday, and has now released more information, including an ambiguous release schedule.

In a revealing Vita Faq this Tuesday, Sony disclosed that the Vita will have a “phased rollout” across its regional markets. Sony reaffirmed the pricing and spec details on Monday at the E3 conference. The Vita’s Wi-Fi version will be $249, and the Wi-Fi and 3G will be priced at $299.

In the US, the 3G version will require a contract with AT&T. The Vita’s 5 inch OLED provides 16,770,000 colors with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 960×544 pixel resolution. Surprisingly, Sony declined to answer its own FAQ question on whether the Vita will be sold exclusively through AT&T, or by any other broadband partner internationally.

Sony did confirm that the Vita cannot be used as a cell phone. However, the case colors will not be released until its launch. The vita will not be compatible with Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos and will connect to the PS3 wireless controller like the PSPgo. Sony also opted not to integrate the Stereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D.

Vita games and content will be sold through the PlayStation store, which is available to both Wi- Fi and 3G models or by purchasing its undisclosed “new game medium” through retailers. The details for the medium have not been released, but it will still be a Flash-based memory card. The significant difference is that it will not only be read-only so that users will be able to save games on the medium itself.

Therefore, it will not be necessary to purchase a separate game storage unit, although the Vita will have a slot for additional storage media. The portable unit will also provide location-based services via a “core PS Vita feature” entitled “Near” that utilizes the PlayStation Network to allow users to locate friends playing on their Vitas “in the vicinity.” Vita players will be able to use Near on the Wi-Fi only model.

Sony will not yet release the details as to whether so-called “non-gaming applications/content” YouTube videos, Skype and PDF files will be supported by the Vita. Sony will announce the titles available at launch, pricing structure and abilities to copy downloaded material to another Vita or transfer game data from games downloaded at the PlayStation store from the PS3 to the PS Vita. In its illusive FAQ, Sony revealed that the Vita will not connect to televisions, and that the battery cannot be removed.
